Starting a business can be extremely intimidating for dozens of reasons, not the least of which is not knowing how exactly to get started. It can be really overwhelming to the point where it paralyzes you and stops you from taking any action at all on your business. At least, that’s how it used to feel for me.

Now that I’ve started multiple businesses of my own, I am happy to share that it’s actually easier than you’d think. Of course, you are going to have to work really hard and make sure all of your bases are covered. But the actual getting things set up is as simple as following any basic food recipe. And I’m not talking about crème brulee or something complicated. We’re talking more like your mom’s go to casserole. The one where you just follow the instructions and it turns out exactly how it should. Starting a business is the same way—you just follow the instructions and your business will be up and running before you know it.

Do any of the following statements resonate with you?

  • I have a business idea but I have no idea how to start a business.
  • I want to take the leap and start my business but I feel a little (or a lot) lost looking for the best way to get started.
  • I want to start a business but I am terrified of failing.
  • I am tired of working my 9-5.
  • I feel unfulfilled by my career.
  • I hate the instability of my job.
  • I am temporarily unable to work because of Covid-19 and the state of the economy scares me. I wish I had more control over my income.
  • I wish I could be my own boss.

At one point or another, I have thought most of the above statements. It came to a breaking point for me when I was working at a law firm a few years after law school. I remember staring at my computer screen day after day, trying as hard as I could to feel thankful for my job, but feeling very unfulfilled and feeling like that firm was not a good fit for me. I needed something different and I couldn’t find the kind of job that I wanted.I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something more out there for me. After several months, I realized I couldn’t find the job I wanted because that job didn’t exist yet. I would have to create it.

I honestly never saw myself as an entrepreneur before that point. I was always taught to follow a certain path– you go to school, get a good education, and get a job. (That’s how my husband and I wound up with $650,000 of student loan debt but that’s another story). All I’m trying to say is, even if you feel completely inadequate and you can’t see how on earth you are going to start your business, I’m here to tell you that YOU CAN. Will it be the easiest thing you have ever done? No. But with my checklist for starting a business, it certainly will be easier than you are likely imagining right now.
