On the island of Oahu, there is a beach affectionately nick named “Pounders.” There is a big sand bar and strong current which allows big waves to break basically right on the sand. Thus, when you body surf, you literally get pounded into the sand. When I was in college, my roommates and I would buy neon floating tubes and go get pounded at Pounders. The force of the waves would grab us in our little neon tubes and dump us onto the sand, but it was so fun because the neon tubes would take the edge off the force of being thrust onto the sand or shore.
If you’ve been following our blog for the past couple of months, you know by now that we have been getting “pounded” financially. We’ve recently had to replace our HVAC, had some plumbing and piping issues, Danny had an eye procedure performed because his vision randomly became very distorted, our car door broke, and most recently, my sweet 101 year old Grandma passed away. Her funeral is this weekend and as you probably know, last minute plane tickets are not cheap.
So, as fun as getting pounded has been, I decided that I am just going to say NO to all of this nonsense. No thank you universe! We’ll take a hard pass on getting pounded to death financially. 🙂 One thing that we have decided to do to take back control of our finances is to do a “No-Spend Summer.” We shared this with our newsletter subscribers yesterday.
This no-spend challenge is going to be a little different than ones we’ve done in the past. (If you haven’t done a no-spend challenge before, here is a very quick and easy explanation). For this challenge, we simply won’t be spending money on eating fast food or at other restaurants for one month, because this is the area of our budget where we routinely perform the worst.
So, if you are interested in joining the challenge, choose one area of your budget that you feel like you are the weakest at, and commit to not spend ANY money in that area for one month! Perhaps you love buying new clothes, or you spend too much money on apps, or Amazon, or maybe you’re like us and you can’t resist the drive thru window at Chick-fil-a. Wherever you struggle most is where you won’t spend any money for one month. We’re starting on June 4(that’s Monday!) and ending on the 4th of July. We’d LOVE for you to join us! Be sure to follow us on Instagram, where we’ll be posting about our progress and would love to see yours!
Have you participated in a no spend challenge before? I’d love to hear from you!
